6 Ways to Create Great Linkable Content

Producing high-quality, linkable content is one of my favorite ways to kill two birds with one stone.

You’re adding valuable information to your site while simultaneously attacking your backlink strategy for SEO. And when done correctly, you can get hundreds or potentially even thousands of new backlinks without too much extra effort.

Don’t believe me? Give these six tactics a try and see for yourself.

#1 – Always Add Value, and Avoid “Link Bait” Style Posts

First and foremost, your content should always be valuable to people landing on your site. Ask yourself this question each time you write something: “If I got zero links from this, would I still publish it?”

If the answer is no, then it’s probably not adding much value.

So stop thinking of your linkable content as “link bait.”

In other words, don’t create content solely as an attempt to attract eyeballs and links. Make sure your content helps people and is truly funny, educational, or useful to a large number of people.

You can provide value by answering questions or meeting needs that your customers lose sleep over. If you can make it have an emotional impact as well as a logical one, it has a better chance of truly resonating (and then being shared).

#2 – Make Sure Everything is Easy to Read, Scan, and Consume

Use language that they everyday person can understand, even if it’s a highly technical or advanced subject matter.

Add headers, bullets, good spacing between paragraphs, and other formatting tricks to make your blogs both readable and useful.

You could be providing ground-breaking value, but it’s totally useless if it’s presented in one giant block of text that nobody wants to read. So take the time to break things up properly and use white space to your advantage.

#3 – Create a Variety of Content

Don’t box yourself into becoming a one-trick pony. Mix things up to increase your chances of appealing to other people.

  • Blog posts
  • Videos
  • Infographics
  • Case Studies
  • Niche-specific opinion articles
  • Podcasts

This is also a great way for you to figure out which types of content are attracting the most backlinks. Then you can double-down in those areas.

#4 – Titles Matter, So Get Creative

Your title is the first thing that people will see when either searching for content organically, before they’ll even consider linking to it.

Again, avoid link bait titles. Instead, be creative without straying too far outside of the box.

The title should clearly convey what the reader can expect to find, while also incentivizing them to click.

For example, let’s compare two titles:

How to Get Better at Web Design

vs.

Beginner’s Guide to Web Design [With Templates + Case Studies]

Obviously, the second title is much better, and drastically increases the chances of attracting both clicks and links.

#5 – Make Your Content Easy to Share

Don’t just publishing something and move on.

Spread the word yourself by getting it in front of as many people as possible. Newsletters, social media, etc. Just get it out there so other people have a chance to see it and then link to you.

I also recommend adding social sharing icons to everything you post on your site. This makes it much easier for people to link without having to take extra steps.

#6 – Don’t Try to Hit a Home Run Every Time

If you try to hit a home run every time you produce something then you’ll never get anything done.

Go hit a bunch of singles, do it regularly, and promote all of your great content, because you never know what will go viral.

Don’t get discouraged either when things don’t work out. Even hall of famers strike out sometimes.

What are other ways you know of to create great linkable content?
